Francesca Tinti is Ikerbasque Research Professor in the Philology and History Department at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.

She was awarded her first degree by the University of Bologna and her PhD by the University of Padua. Before joining UPV/EHU in 2009, she worked for several years at the Universities of Cambridge and Bologna.

Her research interests include early medieval religious, social and cultural history. She has published extensively on charters and cartularies, paying special attention to the interactions between Latin and vernaculars in the documentary practices of early medieval England and the eastern Frankish territories.

She has directed several research projects, including The Digital Edition of the Becerro Galicano and The Languages of Early Medieval Charters. She is also interested in the relations between England and the European continent in the early Middle Ages and has recently published a volume on Europe and the Anglo-Saxons (2021) with Cambridge University Press.

Juan José Larrea is Professor of Medieval History at UPV/EHU. He was awarded his PhD by the University of Toulouse II – Le Mirail.
His work focuses on two main areas of research: the social and political history of Vasconia and the kingdom of Pamplona from the end of the Empire to the first feudal age, on the one hand, and the rural history of the early medieval West on the other, with special attention to the study of the early Carolingian archives.
He has directed and still directs doctoral theses related to both fields, and has coordinated several National Plan projects as PI. He is an associate member of the Framespa laboratory of the CNRS-Université de Toulouse-Jean Jaurès and of the Cercle de Travail sur les conditions de production du savoir médiévistique (LaMOP-CNRS) and has been a visiting researcher at the Institut für Frühmittelalterforschung of the University of Münster.
Between 2001 and 2004 he was Vice-Rector for Basque at UPV/EHU.

Leticia Agúndez is Lecturer at the Historical Sciences Department, University of Cantabria, where she was awarded a PhD in Medieval History (2011).
Her main research line focuses on the social history of written cultures, with special attention to the production of cartularies, forgeries and the institutional memory of religious houses in the kingdoms of Leon, Castile and Portugal.
In 2014 she joined the University of the Basque Country as postdoctoral fellow and in 2017 she was postdoctoral fellow at the University of Porto. She has carried out research stays at the University of Sorbonne IV, Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines and the Centre d’études supérieures de civilisation médiévale (Potiers). She has participated in several national and international research projects, including: Élites clericales y afianzamiento territorial e institucional de la diócesis de Burgos (siglos XI al XV) (2019-2023); Scriptoria, lenguajes y espacio agrario en la alta Edad Media (2018-2021), Le pouvoir des listes au Moyen Âge (2015-2019).
She has obtained several scientific awards, including the X Premio de la Sociedad Española de Estudios Medievales. She is a member of the Buleva-Fuentes group and an international collaborator of the CITCEM-Porto.

Guadalupe Lopetegui Semperena was awarded her PhD by UPV/EHU and has been ‘Profesora Titular’ of Latin Philology in the same university since 1995.
Since the publication of a study based on her doctoral thesis (‘Edición y estudio de la documentación latina de Sancho VI de Navarra’), she has developed three main research avenues: 1) the relations between medieval Latin and Romance languages through the perspective provided by historical sociolinguistics; 2) the rhetorical and grammatical education of medieval intellectuals; and 3) theoretical and practical aspects of late antique and medieval ars rhetorica in literary, documentary and epistolary contexts.
While the latter research avenue has so far been the most prolific, more recently she has returned to the study of Latin charters, especially from medieval Navarre, from a lexicographic, stylistic and socio-cultural point of view.
She is also interested in the relations between literacy and orality, especially in multilingual contexts.

Eneko López is ‘Profesor Adjunto’ in History and Economic Institutions at UPV/EHU.
His main area of expertise is the economy of al-Andalus and the western Mediterranean from the eighth to the eleventh century.
In his doctoral thesis, written under the supervision of Prof. Eduardo Manzano Moreno at the Centro de Ciencias Humanas y Sociales-Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CCHS-CSIC), he explored urban growth in the south-east of al-Andalus during the Umayyad period.
His three main research avenues are: 1) the institutional, economic and political relations between the Umayyad state and the northern Christian polities of the Iberian Peninsula; 2) the economic production and political use of material culture by the Islamic states; 3) urban and commercial growth, including its influence on the processes of Islamization and Arabization.
He is the author of the book Mercaderes, artesanos y ulemas. Las ciudades de las coras de Ilbira y Pechina en época omeya (UJA Editorial, 2020) and coautor of Medina Azahara (National Geographic, 2018).
He has also edited the volume Una nueva mirada a la formación al-Andalus. La arabización y la islamización desde la interdisciplinariedad (UPV/EHU, 2022).

Jesús Lorenzo Jiménez was awarded his PhD in History in 2008 and has worked as a professional archaeologist before receiving a MEC mobility grant for the period 2009-2011 which took him to the University of Chieti-Pescara (Italy).
In 2012-2016 he was a Juan de la Cierva Post-Doctoral Fellow at UPV/EHU where he is currently employed as ‘Profesor Adjunto’.
His research focuses on al-Andalus, conceived as an Islamic society in which it is possible to recognize the convergence of different social and cultural patterns. In this context he has paid special attention to the study of the frontier society of the Ebro Valley in the period between the eighth and the eleventh centuries, seeing it as a place of exchange and hybridization.
From a methodological point of view, he has combined the study of written sources with that of archaeological finds, also owing to his participation in archaeological excavations carried out by different research groups (UPV/EHU, CSIC, University of Chieti) in Spain, Italy, Libya and Cyprus.
He currently directs the excavation at Valtierra (Navarre). His research has been published in circa 30 publications, including journal articles in Spanish and European journals, book chapters, a book, and an edition of Arabic texts.

David Peterson has a degree in History from Oxford University and a Doctorate (2006) in Medieval History from the Universidad de Burgos.
His research centres on early medieval society in northern Iberia and is based mainly on written sources and onomastics.
He is the author of two monographs on respectively, the Sierra de la Demanda (2006) and the Alto Ebro region (2009).
While based at the Universidad del País Vasco he was responsible for the development of the digital edition of the Becerro Galicano de San Millán de la Cogolla (http://www.ehu.eus/galicano/), and currently concentrates his research on medieval documentation and on the onomastic evidence for Islamic influence on early medieval Castile.
Since 2015 he has taught Medieval History at the Universidad de Burgos.

Pablo Acal is Predoctoral Fellow at the University of Cantabria (UC) in the Historical Sciences Department, where his research is funded by a ‘Concepción Arenal’ scholarship.
He is working on a thesis entitled ‘Obispos, monacato y hagiografía: una aproximación comparada a la figura y funciones de los obispos/abades en la Península Ibérica e Inglaterra (siglos XI-XII)’, under the supervision of Leticia Agúndez (UC) and Francesca Tinti (UPV/EHU).
His research focuses on bishops with abbatial responsibilities from a hagiographic and historiographical perspective, bearing in mind their symbolic representation and archetypal character, as well as their ecclesiastical career and creation of power networks.

Izei Permach Agirre is Predoctoral Fellow at UPV/EHU, where her research is funded by a Basque Government grant.

Her thesis, supervised by Juan José Larrea and Ramón Díaz de Durana is entitled Sociedad medieval y ficciones de igualdad: la evolución de las sociedades de la Vasconia pirenaica y cantábrica y la construcción de mitos igualitarios (siglos XI al XV).

Her research focuses on sociopolitical developments and related systems of representation.

Andrea Aparicio is Predoctoral Fellow at UPV/EHU, where her research is funded by a Basque Government grant.
Her thesis, supervised by Juan José Larrea and Lluís To Figueras is entitled Formas de dominación y estructuras de parentesco en la sociedad rural de los siglos X y XI.
In her research she explores land appropriation, kinship and documentary practices in relation to mechanisms of control and domination.

Aitor Armendariz is FPU Predoctoral Fellow at UPV/EHU, where he is carrying out research for a doctoral thesis entitled Comunidades, violencia y territorialidad en las regiones del norte peninsular en los siglos X y XI under the supervision of Juan José Larrea and Ernesto Pastor.
His research focuses on forms of exploitation and appropriation of uncultivated lands and their relations with mechanisms of territorial control and violence in rural areas.
He is also interested in the production and transmission of the written word.

Nora Igartua is a PhD student in the Philology and History Department of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.
She is working on a thesis entitled Prácticas documentales y usos de la escritura en monasterios altomedievales del norte peninsular. Siglos IX al XII, under the supervision of Prof. Juan José Larrea.
Her research focuses on the detailed analysis of one of the oldest extant single sheets of parchment written in the Visigothic script, also known as a pancarta, which formerly belonged to the archive of the monastery of San Salvador de Leire (Navarre). Nora’s research explores the process of archival memory construction in the scriptorium of Leire in the period between the eleventh and the early twelfth centuries.

Nagore Palomares is a PhD student in the Philology and History Department of the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.
She was formerly a Research Assistant at the University of Alcalá, where she graduated in Modern Languages and Translation.
Her current research, supervised by Francesca Tinti, focuses on the interactions between Latin and vernacular languages in early medieval England and the eastern Frankish territories.

Theodora Paraskevopoulou is a PhD student in Medieval History at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.
Her research, supervised by Francesca Tinti and Eneko López, explores the influence of Greek in medieval western Europe, with special attention to Anglo-Saxon England.

Robert Gallagher in a Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Kent (UK).
He completed his degrees at the Universities of York and Cambridge, and prior to joining Kent, he held postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, and UPV/EHU, the latter as part of the Languages of Early Medieval Charters (www.ehu.eus/lemc) project.
His research is focused primarily around early medieval England, its literary cultures and its international connections. He is particularly interested in understanding the social roles and values that the written word held and offered individuals within early medieval societies.
In exploring these issues, his work encompasses questions of language choice, literacy, identity, uses of the past, patronage, authorship and textual performance, while he utilises a wide range of sources, including manuscripts, poetry, liturgy and letters.

Edward Roberts is Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval History at the University of Kent. He studied at the University of Manchester and gained his PhD at the University of St Andrews in 2014. After holding research positions at King's College London, University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU and the University of Liverpool, he joined the School of History at Kent in 2018.
Edward is a historian of Carolingian and Ottonian Europe (c.750-c.1050), with wide interests in medieval literature and law, especially historical writing, hagiography, charters and canon law.
He is the author of Flodoard of Rheims and the Writing of History in the Tenth Century (Cambridge University Press, 2019) and editor (with Robert Gallagher and Francesca Tinti) of The Languages of Early Medieval Charters: Latin, Germanic Vernaculars and the Written Word (Brill, 2021). His current research examines bishops, mobility and the institutional growth of the church in tenth-century Europe.
